One of a Kind
Ted Upton – A Life of Art and Heart
Ted Upton was truly one of a kind – smart, funny, and gifted. A barefoot scallywag with a gentle spirit, he was deeply loved by all who knew him.
He thrived on challenge and change, always eager for new people, and new experiences. After migrating from England to Australia, he worked across the country, but it was in his 60s that he discovered two great loves: his wife, and his own artistic voice.
As a sculptor, Ted gained public acclaim and many awards. His work reflected not only his creativity, but also his profound connection to the natural world and his determination to protect it. He was drawn to forests, wilderness, and wildlife far more than cities, and he believed human society worked best at a village scale – much like the close-knit communities of Macleay Island.
Ted is remembered with admiration and affection, and he is deeply missed.
